Representatives from Pearl have been after us to give the brand a try since 1998. At Lakeside Bicycles we take our cycling clothing pretty seriously, we were not easy to convince. What finally turned us around were your persistent requests for their clothing and a series of surveys by J. D. Powers. In over twenty categories covering brand recognition and quality Pearl Izumi kicked cycling clothing butt. A dominant number 1 in all but one category and a strong second in that one. If you are anything like a typical cyclist, then you know of Pearl Izumi as a great company that makes some of the best cycling clothing going. You convinced us, so we were intrigued to learn more about their name and history. The first part of the name Pearl Izumi is easy. As you'd expect, it comes from "pearl," the gem. The second word "Izumi," is taken from an area of Japan known for its clear water.
So, Pearl Izumi means "fountain of pearls," an appropriate name for a company that fountain-like, continually produces clothing gems. Equally interesting, Pearl was founded 50 years ago in Tokyo when a father produced Japan's first bicycle clothing for his son, a promising racer.
