Lakeside Bicycles: The Campagnolo experts since 1997

Campagnolo Bora WTO Rim:  Each component of this wheel has been optimized in the wind tunnel in order to improve its aerodynamic performance. It therefore delivers multiple benefits that can be noted on different routes, from the most demanding of sprints to relaunching after a bend, while still ensuring efficiency on the flat and now also suitable for the hardest uphill finishes! It is a turning point in the all-rounder segment: a truly multi-purpose wheel.

Aerodynamic carbon rims, aluminum hubs and ceramic USB cup-and-cone bearing system in the hubs themselves: every design choice has been made with a view to optimising performance. The 19 mm internal diameter of the rim enables tyres of 23mm, 25mm and 28mm to be fitted. In addition, with the 2-Way Fit version, Campagnolo offers its tried-and-tested technology with full compatibility with clincher and tubeless tyres. While the key purpose of these wheels is to deliver extreme performance, safety is also guaranteed by the Campagnolo AC3 (All Conditions Carbon Control) technology, which ensures safe, modular braking in all weather conditions.

Available versions: 33, 45, 60, and 70mm rim profiles, bright and dark label, Campagnolo FW or HG11 body.  For more information please feel free to contact the Campagnolo experts of Lakeside Bicycles by phone at 503-699-8665 (10-7 W-F, 10-6 Sat, 12-5 Sun) or by email at Info@Lakeside-Bikes.Com

Colnago Master X

The Colnago Master X-Light is, in many ways, the definitive Colnago frameset. It's a lugged, plated, painted steel bike with the distinctive fork, tube shapes, and paint that placed it apart from the pack. It first appeared thirty years ago built and painted, as always, by hand in Italy.

The frameset is exactly where it has always appeared in the Colnago lineup. The tubing, DT15V steel, is identical to the tubing they used before. When the bike was built last, it was with a tubeset that was a joint effort between Columbus and Colnago. Columbus isn't making the tubes anymore, so Colnago tracked down the guy who drew the tubes, brought him the dies, and he produced them for Colnago. So you get the same mix of star-shaped and round tubes. They are joined by the same lugs. The straight-blade Precisa fork, revolutionary when it first appeared. And so is the chrome-plating, and the luxurious, detailed paint. Even with all this going on, the frame is a relatively svelte 1400g.

The big deal with all the pieces is how they work together with the geometry for an incredible ride. The straight blade fork is precise and compliant thanks to the rake and internal tapering. The star-shaped tubes resist the torsional forces of pedaling and the round stays keep the bike comfortable. The ride is fast, stable, and comfortable. Great for riding long, great for riding hard, great for riding long and hard. If you ever wonder what the DNA of a Colnago ride is, ride this bike, and you'll know it.

And the paint scheme! The paint applied over the chrome is the acme of Colnago's fascination with fun and funky detailing. Fades, bright contrasts, intricate graphics, its all here.

The frameset sports the same 1" steerer tube, though this time with a threadless steerer. Italian-threaded bottom bracket. 27.2mm seat tube diameter. Room for 25mm tires. Two bottle braze-ons. Plated braze-on front derailleur tab. Integrated seat clamp with pin included. Vertical dropouts.

The Colnago Master X-Light frameset is the extra light bike of yore, 30 years young. Its ride is now as it was then, a joy like no other.

The Colnago Master X is built in sizes from 49 to 65cm in 1 cm increments and in seven colors. We Currently have a 57cm frame in the white, PR99 color scheme in stock. For more information please contact the Colnago experts of Lakeside Bicycles by phone (W-F 10-7, Sat 10-6, or Sun 12-5) at 503-699-8665 or via e-mail at Info@Lakeside-Bikes.com

Dahon: Freedon unfolds

History

Dahon was founded in 1982 on a vision of “green” mobility, a form of transportation that not only serves to keep people healthier, but also preserves the environment for the next generation. As a relentless innovator, Dr. Hon toiled in his garage for seven years to create the perfect folding bicycle that would uphold these ideals. After presenting his invention to several established but uninterested companies, Dr. Hon and his brother Henry decided establish their own company from scratch. The two gathered venture funding and established their headquarters in Southern California while Dr. Hon went to Taiwan to build Dahon's first factory. Two years later, in 1984, Dahon folding bicycles were rolling off the assembly line as the most compact folding bicycle on the market at that time. Under the continued leadership of Dr. Hon, now recognized as the father of the modern folding bike, Dahon and its team of 70 engineers continue to set the pace with new technologies and innovations.

Production

Primary production takes place in the company’s main factory in Shenzhen, China. Another facility, near Beijing, produces Dahon bikes for the Chinese market, which continues to grow strongly for the U.S.-based company. Beginning in 2012, all Dahon brand bikes destined for Europe will be made in Bulgaria. In a strategic partnership with Maxcom Ltd., the company is setting up a full-scale production base at one of the most modern facilities on the continent. All of the bikes for the European market will be made at the ISO 9001:2008-certified facility in Plovdiv, which specializes in the manufacturing of bicycles and features state-of-the-art machining technology and modern quality inspection equipment.

Folding Bikes

Most Dahon bicycles use a patented single hinge frame design, whereby the handlebar folds down and the frame hinge swings to the left, leaving the handlebar inside. Biggest sellers are the models with 16 or 20 inch wheels, but models are available with wheels from 12 inches to 700C. Models are available with derailleur or hub gear shifter, or both or none.

Models

For 2012 Dahon offers 28 models of folding or portable bicycles in wheel sizes ranging from 16-26” with aluminum alloy or steel frames. Most of the 2012 offerings are true folding bicycles with some, like the Tarazed mountain bike, using Dahon "Flat Pak" technology. One of the company's best selling bikes is the Boardwalk D7, an entry-level, steel-frame commuter bike.

Special bikes

In 2008 to celebrate 25 years of production Dahon produced a special edition based on the Mµ series of bikes - the Mµ XXV. 250 of these machines were produced. In March 2009 they announced that they would produce 1,000 sets of a special edition bike based on its Curve D3 folding bike with the Spanish design firm Kukuxumusu. 2012 marks the company's 30th anniversary and Dahon have produced 300 limited edition bikes to honor the occasion, along with 3,000 more affordable replicas.

Awards

Dahon received an Innovative Products Award each for a folding bike entry and a suspension postpump, which combined an air suspension system and bicycle pump inside a single seatpost, at the 2009 Taipei International Cycle Show. In September 2009, Dahon's Ios XL, a bike designed for the urban commuter, was awarded a Eurobike Gold Design Award. Only 77 entries out of a total of 400 applicants from the bicycle industry worldwide were awarded with Eurobike Awards in 2009, and out of those only eight received a Gold Award for outstanding achievements in design and innovation. Other awards include a 2005 Eurobike award the Ciao! mini bike, a 2006 Eurobike award for the Glide P7/P8, 2006 Fiets RAI Dutch Bi

ENVE Composites Factory Tour – Inside Look at Company & Carbon Fiber Manufacturing

ENVE Composites factory tour - entrance to offices

ENVE Composites is considered one of (if not the) premier carbon fiber tube and component manufacturers, and we were given a chance to peek behind the curtain at their operation. Well, most of it anyway. There are a few things we couldn’t photograph or mention, but for the most part they opened their doors wide and gave us surprising amount of access.

Based in Ogden, Utah, ENVE produces carbon fiber tubes and frame parts for a very high percentage of US custom frame builders. Brands like Crumpton, Parlee, Independent Fabrication, Calfee and many, many more rely on ENVE’s carbon expertise to make their bikes. And, of course, there’s the lustworthy matte black component line we’re all familiar with.

Follow us along through a shop tour and see how they do it…

THE COMPANY THEY KEEP

Jason Schiers is the founder. He started his entrepreneurial life with a surf wear company, followed by a number of other companies he built and sold. His last venture before ENVE was a machine shop in Las Vegas that made, among other things, some of the safety harnesses and contraptions used by Cirque du Soleil. He built a name for himself by turning around replacement parts overnight (apparently their acrobatics are quite hard on equipment). Eventually, he sold that company to an investment group and got into the bike industry. He learned about carbon fiber in the machining industry working on composite and laminate aerospace and NASCAR projects. Then, he was VP of Lew Wheels until MQC bought them and then Reynolds. He stayed on with them for about two years to develop a wheel line (he started their carbon clinchers). His entrepreneurial spirit led him to start Edge Composites with the idea of making structural carbon parts for cars, which quickly led back to bike parts. Brett and Taylor Satterthwaite (cousins) owned Dune’s Edge, a dune buggy company. They led Jason to a closet full of $5,000-and-up mountain bikes and said he should make parts for them. Edge Composites (now ENVE) was born. That was 2005, and the cousins invested the capital to get things rolling.

Sarah Lehman came aboard in 2010 to help the company grow to the next level.

“I came in because they had grown to a point where they needed someone day to day to run the business,” Lehman said. “I came in on a project basis to build the organization and structure but ended up loving the business. It has all the right components, good people, passion and the financial backing to see it through. My background is in Fortune 100 biotech and pharmaceutical companies (Amgen, ironically, among others), but I’m happier at a smaller company where my impact can be immediately felt and measured.”

Joe Stanish started as a pro downhill mountain biker and worked with Rob Roskopp at Santa Cruz helping them get the Tasman up and running and get their grassroots team going. Then he went to Rockshox working in product development and engineering first, then in manufacturing. He helped transition manufacturing first to Coorado Springs, then to Taiwan as they grew and were acquired by SRAM. He was then recruited as vp operations at Progressive Suspension and worked their for several years.

Now Stanish is VP of operations at ENVE. He’s responsible for taking their ideas and making it possible to manufacture their products in the US. Until he came along, they were running high scrap rates and had a huge backlog. Sarah had come in a year earlier and collected a ton of data on the process, but no one was doing anything with it. Having this available allowed him to quickly streamline the process and reduce errors.

Kevin Nelson is their lead engineer and has worked in the industry since 1997, starting at GT and Schwinn. Then he went to Specialized for a couple of years to work on road. He wanted to make things, though, and moved to Reynolds, where he met Jason and got his start working in carbon. When Reynolds’ California offices closed, he started doing project work for Jason, working mostly on components while Jason worked on rims.

ENVE (Formerly EDGE Composites) is a relatively new company with a strong composites background, specifically in the bicycle industry. Their engineers have worked for bike industry companies such as Schwinn/GT, Specialized, Felt, Reynolds and Easton. In fact, you're looking at over 30 years of carbon experience - and that's just on the engineering side. They're a bunch of composite tech heads and not afraid of introducing and investing in new design concepts, processes and technologies that enable them to offer the absolute best products on the market today (not to mention the things they're working on for tomorrow). Of major importance to them is that their wheels are proudly made in the Ogden, Utah. They're an American company committed to American design, engineering and manufacturing. You'll often find their president in the lay-up tent rather than tapping on a Blackberry - and that's the epitome of how they all work together to reach a common goal. There was a time that ENVE only developed products for other companies. In fact, they've been making all of the tubes and moulded parts for the nation's most fastidious frame builders - Parlee, Independent Fabrications, Calfee, Vanilla, Crumpton and Rugamer; custom artisans who refuse to adopt the big box mentality. That said, their demands are higher to the point of inspecting each and every tube used to build their designs. When you're committed to the perfect marriage of art and engineering, you don't settle for second best. One thing you won't find from ENVE is a bunch of marketing hyperbola. Sure, they have a great PR and marketing department, but they're 100% wholesome in their statements, and they don't launch anything new until they are just as satisfied that their products are the best they can possibly be. They are not driven by a model year calendar. There's no fluff. No flash. Just quality engineered components that are guaranteed to be the best you've ever ridden - a statement that they take incredibly seriously. You only have to look at who they partner with to develop their distribution to understand just how committed they are to checking every box that the entire team is worthy of representing. It's all about walking it - and they have put plenty of miles in; as have their athletes. They sponsor some incredible people, but you'd probably be even more surprised to find that we also take care of world class athletes that aren't allowed to run our decals because they're sponsored by competitors. That said, it's not just a compliment to the integrity of their products, it's a necessity in the minds of some of the worlds most demanding athletes. They can't tell you who they are... So they just leave that to you to go hunt them out. Suffice to say, they're everywhere...

"If steel wanted to race on a steel bike, it would buy this."

Life means little without something extra. Hidden away in the norther Italian city of Verona there is a workshop. Behind its bird bedecked doors lays a priceless treasure: Dario Pegoretti's workshop. We love these frames. We love the way they ride, the way they climb and reward every ounce of power you can summon and then drop off the top of the climb and guide you down the descent, the way they spring into action when you jump out of the saddle sprinting for the road signs with your mates and the beautiful comfortable ride they provide through a long day in the saddle. Most of all we love the way Dario does his own thing and is gloriously opinionated. He knows weight isn't everything and that ultimately power transfer and comfort are what matter most to his customers. He is innovative (check out the Reponsorium) but not for the sake of it and never to follow fashion. If you buy a Pegoretti you are buying into Dario's knowledge, his artistry and a great Italian framebuilding tradition. If you are after the latest ultra-lightweight, compact frame from the most exotic material look elsewhere, but if you are after the bike of a lifetime look no further. Dario Pegoretti credits Gino Milani for teaching him the science and the art of building bicycles. From there, Dario moved to his own workshop, where he continued to build frames. Pegoretti was amongst the first of the European framebuilders to embrace lugless TIG welding to build premium bicycles. In addition Dario worked with leading edge manufacturers, such as Excell and Dedacciai, in the development of new materials and tube sets. He earned a strong following among professional riders, and built bikes for a number of elite teams. Recently Dario moved to a new workshop where he builds a small number of fine frames, by hand, each year. In this age of mass produced products Dario Pegoretti occupies a unique position as a true individual. Since 2005 Dario has been building all his steel frames exclusively out of Columbus Niobium Spirit tubing insisting that Columbus take the extra step to heat treat the tubes for him. While the stock version of the tubes has very good elongation qualities and thereby provides a nice bit of shock damping, heat treating them gives them a considerable increase in responsiveness under a load, making a Pegoretti feel like it's gliding on a poor road surface to an extent unmatched by other tubesets. If you love bicycles and bicycling then every day you spend without a Pegoretti is a day spent in cycling depravation. Tell your spouse that it is a safety issue. Tell your children that they can go to college some other time. Tell your Priest or Rabbi that it will make you a better person. Tell your Pegoretti dealer that you are ready and then just do it. Everything will be better as a result. The Marcello and Duende frames are available in stock sizes 49cm - 60cm in 1 cm increments. The price includes a one colour paint finish, for other paint designs or custom geometry there is an extra charge of $300. (that is per color) Should you come to the reasonable decision to own a Pegoretti, please allow the enthusiasts at Lakeside Bicycles to offer your their assistance. Our hours are Pacific Time 10-7 W-F, 10-6 Sat, 12-5 Sun or you can e-mail us at Info@lakeside-bikes.com.
The History of Pinarello

GIOVANNI PINARELLO, the eighth of twelve brothers, was born in Catena di Villorba in 1922. He was born at a time when life could be rather difficult, which was not uncommon, for many families ot the humble, and peasant backgrounds, in the rural farming areas of Veneto. The struggles of a simple farming life, as well as surviving the hardships of both World Wars, greatly effected and influenced the life of Giovanni Pinarello and his family. His impoverished and simple upbringing was not able to extinguish a passion Giovanni discovered he hard for the “Two Wheels”. With his determination and his love for the bicycle, Giovanni was able to make his dream come true. He made it possible to borrow whatever he needed to become part of the world of cycling. So at the age of seventeen, he began competing in the junior’s category. Giovanni’s dream soon became a reality and his passion began to bring him many victories. In 1947, after winning over sixty titles as an amateur, he became a member of the professional world of cycling. He was part of the professional cycling world until 1953, with five wins to his mention. With the end of this cycling career, the birth and realization of yet another of Giovanni’s passions arose, the PINARELLO (the bicycle). The making of the Pinarello began in Catena di Villorba, towards the end of the 1940’s. The roots of Pinarello can be traced back to the beginning of WW II. This is when, at the age of fifteen, Giovanni began making bicycles at the factory of Paglianti. He continued making bicycles throughout his amateur cycling career. Bicycle manufacturing for the Pinarello family can be traced as far back as 1922, when Giovanni’s cousin Alessandro was already making bicycles in a small factory. The beginning of this manufacturing was signified with a gold medal and a diploma in his recognition, given at the prestigious Milan Bicycle Fair of 1925. In 1952 an opportunity presented itself to Giovanni Pinarello as a direct result of a major disappointment in his cycling career. The opportunity was for him to become an integral part of the very beginning ot the manufacturing world of bicycles in Treviso. The disappointment was that he had to give up his first love and passion, bicycle racing . In 1952, Giovanni was presented with the dilemma of having to give up the chance to participate in the very prestigious Giro d’Italia. He was to be replaced to make way for the up and coming new star, Pasqualino Fornara. Giovanni had no choice in the matter. His sponsor, Bottecchia, offered him 100,000 Lire, a great deal of money for the times. That loss later became his fortune, career, and success, with the beginning and opening of the first and most renowned bicycle store in Treviso. Pinarello was fortunate to be in a very economically prosperous area of Italy. This area was also synonymous with cycling and known for its manufacturing excellence. His intuition told him to take advantage of the opportunity that presented itself, and to be part of the world of team sponsorship. At first he began by helping to promote and advertise for small local teams. He also aided in the survival of the teams with whatever they needed to be able to participate in the competitive and expensive world of racing. The first team to participate in a national competition with a Pinarello bicycle was la Padovani, in 1957. This marked the beginning of sponsoring many bicycle teams. Sponsorship was a very important and crucial vehicle in the recognition and promotion of the Pinarello name. It also helped to promote his bicycle store in Treviso. In 1960 came the sponsoring of the first professional team, the Mainetti, which developed and produced many champion cyclists of the area. In 1966 the success of Guido de Rosso truly made a difference for Pinarello in the professional world of cycling. His victory in the Tour d’Avenir in France put the Treviso on the cycling map. This was the first international victory for Pinarello. The first victory at the Giro d’Italia in 1975 by Fausto Bertoglio (Jolly Ceramica team), was another very important victory that boosted the fame and substance of the Pinarello reputation. After many years of team affiliations in the professional field, this was an instant and sensational result from the Jolly Ceramica team since their partnership only began in 1974. The final victory and other particular success at the Giro of 1975 were significant in putting the Pinarello name over the top. Until recently, Pinarello has never experienced such fame and notoriety. The name was now visible through the media having exposure through the television and began to be recognized for its exclusive artistic performance. The decade of the 80’s proved to be quite fruitful with many victories in the field of cycling.
